How to Load and Strap a Vehicle Correctly
on a Rented Car Hauler

Loading a vehicle onto a car hauler starts with the ramps fully extended and the trailer on level ground. Drive the vehicle onto the trailer slowly and stop with the front wheels against the chocks or front stops. Put the transmission in neutral and release the parking brake before strapping begins. A vehicle left in gear or with the brake engaged develops stress in the drivetrain and brake components under the sustained tension of the tie-down straps over a long haul between Amarillo and a destination further across the Panhandle or beyond.

Four-point strapping through the vehicle's designated frame tie-down hooks is the correct method. Ratchet straps with soft loop ends protect the frame coating and paint. The straps should compress the suspension slightly at all four corners, which reduces bounce during transit and prevents the strap tension from loosening on rough road sections. After strapping, push firmly on each corner of the vehicle before moving the rig. A properly strapped vehicle does not move under that pressure.
