Loading Strategy That Prevents Trailer Sway

Trailer sway can happen when weight is loaded too far back or when cargo shifts during braking. It can feel like the trailer is pushing the towing vehicle side to side, especially at higher speeds.

To reduce sway risk, place the heaviest items slightly forward of the trailer axle area. Keep heavy items low and avoid stacking weight high near the back door. Most importantly, secure everything so it cannot slide.

Best loading habits:

  • Weight placement - Keep heavy cargo forward so the tongue has enough downward pressure for stability.
  • Tie-down use - Strap items tightly so they cannot slide into the walls during turns or sudden stops.
  • Low center of gravity - Place heavy items on the floor to reduce sway and tipping risk.
  • Balanced side-to-side load - Distribute weight evenly so one side of the trailer is not overloaded.

A stable load makes towing smoother and reduces stress for the driver.
