Pre-Tow Safety Checks for Enclosed Trailers
Enclosed trailers tow differently than open trailers because they are heavier and catch more wind. A few basic checks before leaving the pickup location can prevent dangerous towing issues, ticket risks, and rental disputes.
Even if you have towed before, it’s worth taking five minutes to confirm everything is connected correctly. Most towing problems happen at the start, not halfway through the trip.
Important checks to complete:
- Hitch and ball match - Confirm the ball size matches the coupler and that the latch is fully locked.
- Safety chains - Cross the chains under the coupler so they can help catch the tongue if it disconnects.
- Lights and wiring - Test brake lights, turn signals, and running lights before you pull into traffic.
- Brake requirements - Verify whether the trailer requires a brake controller and confirm yours works.
These checks make towing more stable and reduce the chance of a failed pickup.
