Securing Heavy Equipment on a
Rented Trailer for Panhandle Hauls
Heavy equipment on a rented trailer should be secured at four points minimum, using the machine's designated tie-down rings and the trailer's tie-down rail system. Chains with properly rated load binders are the correct method for machinery in the skid steer, excavator, and agricultural equipment weight range. Ratchet straps are not adequate for machines that weigh several thousand pounds or more. The chain tension needs to be sufficient to hold the machine stable through rough surface conditions, not just smooth highway travel.
For tilt deck rentals, confirming that the deck lock is fully engaged before departure is a safety step that should not be skipped. A tilt mechanism that is not fully locked creates movement during transport that no amount of chain securement fully compensates for. Panhandle roads between Amarillo and rural job sites can be rough enough that a load secured for highway conditions should be inspected again after the first stretch of unpaved road.
