How to Secure a Skid Steer or Mini Excavator on a Trailer

Skid steers and mini excavators should be secured at four points, using the machine's dedicated tie-down rings rather than attaching to any structural component not intended for that purpose. Chains are the preferred method for equipment in this weight class, and they should be tensioned with load binders rather than left slack. The machine's blade or bucket should be lowered to the deck surface to reduce the center of gravity during transport.

Before driving the machine onto the equipment trailer, confirm that the trailer is properly connected and the brakes are functional. A machine loaded on an unsecured or disconnected trailer creates serious risk. After loading, check all four tie-down points, verify the deck lock is engaged on tilt trailers, and walk around the rig before moving. On West Texas roads, where surface conditions can shift quickly, a properly secured load becomes even more important.
