Weight Ratings and GVWR:
What Midland Contractors Need to Know

Every equipment trailer carries a gross vehicle weight rating that defines the maximum combined weight of the trailer and its cargo. Exceeding that rating puts stress on the trailer frame, axles, and tires, and creates handling problems that compound at speed. The GVWR needs to be compared against the operating weight of the machine being hauled, not just the machine's base weight. Attachments, fuel, and any additional cargo add to the total.

The tow vehicle's rated towing capacity is a separate limit that also cannot be ignored. A trailer within its GVWR rating can still exceed the towing capacity of the vehicle pulling it. Midland contractors running heavy equipment between sites typically have purpose-built tow vehicles, but confirming the numbers before a rental equipment trailer haul is worth doing regardless of experience level.
