Flatbed vs. Utility Trailer:
Why Open Side Access Changes the Decision
Utility trailers have side rails, which makes them good for loads that need containment but creates a problem for anything that requires side access during loading. A forklift cannot set a pallet down into a utility trailer from above or slide pipe in from the side. The same supplier who loads a flatbed rental in under five minutes may not be able to load a utility trailer at all depending on their equipment setup.
For loads where containment matters more than side access, a utility trailer is the better rental. Loose materials, landscaping supplies, and moderate debris loads that stay within the rail height work well on an open utility trailer. When the load is palletized, oversized, or placed by equipment rather than by hand, the flatbed rental is the correct choice for McAllen material hauls.
