What Truck Setup Is Required for a Gooseneck Rental

A gooseneck trailer requires a pickup truck with a gooseneck ball installed through the bed floor. Most one-ton trucks from Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet are available with this setup and carry gooseneck towing ratings typically ranging from 20,000 to over 30,000 pounds depending on the specific truck and engine configuration.

The truck's payload rating is a separate consideration from its towing rating. Gooseneck tongue weight, typically 15 to 25 percent of the total trailer and load weight, transfers directly into the truck bed. A truck that meets the towing rating for a gooseneck haul may still be over its payload rating if the tongue weight is substantial. Confirming both numbers before the rental date is the check that makes the gooseneck rental work correctly from the start.
