What Truck Setup Is Required for a Gooseneck Rental
A gooseneck trailer requires a pickup truck with a gooseneck ball installed through the bed floor over the rear axle. This is a specific hitch setup, not a standard bumper receiver hitch, and not a fifth-wheel hitch. Most one-ton trucks from Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet are available with this setup either from the factory or through an aftermarket installation.
Two ratings matter for gooseneck towing: the truck's towing capacity and its payload rating. Towing capacity covers the combined weight of trailer and load. Payload rating covers what the truck bed itself can carry, which includes the gooseneck tongue weight that transfers into the bed. Tongue weight on a gooseneck is typically 15 to 25 percent of the total trailer and load weight. Both numbers need to support the load before the rental date.
