How to Load and Transport a Rented Boom Lift

Renting a boom lift is the easy part. Getting it to the job is where people run into trouble, because a boom lift is heavy, tall and long, and none of that is forgiving on a trailer. Load it wrong or tie it down wrong and you've got a serious problem moving at highway speed.

Hauling one comes down to three things that all have to line up: the right trailer under it, a safe way up the ramps, and the machine stowed and strapped down the way it's meant to be. Get those right and transport is routine. Here's how to handle all three, for a straight telescopic boom or an articulating one, so the machine gets to the site in the same shape it left in.

Start With the Right Trailer

Match the trailer to the machine's operating weight

The number that matters is the boom lift's operating weight, what the machine actually weighs, not its platform capacity. The operating weight is what you're hauling, and a common and costly mistake is sizing a trailer to the lift's rated work capacity instead of its weight. Get the operating weight from the listing or the spec plate, and match the trailer to that.

Rating, front to back

The trailer's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) has to cover the machine plus the trailer's own weight, and the tow vehicle has to handle the combined load. Confirm the whole chain, tow vehicle, trailer and machine, rather than just one piece of it.

Deck length and width for a stowed boom

Booms are long even folded or retracted, so confirm the deck length fits the machine's stowed footprint. This matters most for a straight telescopic boom, which tends to be longer stowed than an articulating one. A heavy-equipment trailer or deckover with the right rating and length is the usual choice, and a bigger machine may need a heavier class. Loading: Ramp Angle and Getting It Up

Load on firm, level ground

Load and unload on firm, level ground so the ramp angle is what it's designed to be. Loading on a slope or on soft ground changes the effective angle and the footing under the ramps, and both work against you on a machine this heavy.

Mind the ramp angle and the break-over

The pinch point is where the ramps meet the deck, the break-over, and a low-clearance machine can drag or hang up there if the angle is too steep. Longer ramps make a shallower, safer angle, so use ramps rated for the machine and long enough to keep it gentle, and know your machine's ground clearance before you start up.

Slow, straight and spotted

Drive up slow and straight, centered on the ramps, with a spotter positioned safely to guide you, and never rush the transition onto the deck. Position the machine on the deck for proper weight distribution, keeping the heavy counterweight end placed so the loaded trailer carries the right tongue weight, not so little that the trailer sways or so much that it squats the tow vehicle. If a machine won't climb the ramp cleanly, stop and fix the angle rather than forcing it, and check the manual, since some machines are meant to load a particular end first. Stow the Boom for Transport

Lower and retract everything

With the machine on the deck, fully lower and retract the boom into its travel position. A boom that isn't stowed is both a height hazard and an unsecured load, so it needs to ride in its designed rest or cradle, not part way up.

Straight versus articulating

A straight telescopic boom retracts fully and lowers into its support, and its stowed length is exactly what you sized the deck for. An articulating boom folds down into its cradle at the joints, more compact, but with the same rule: it has to be fully stowed in the travel position, not left folded halfway.

Engage the travel locks

Engage any travel or transport locks the machine has, and secure the turntable rotation lock if it's equipped with one, so the boom and turntable can't shift or swing in transit. Follow the machine's manual and the decals on the machine itself, since the stow procedure and the lock locations differ by model.

Tie It Down Right

Use the designated tie-down points

Boom lifts have marked tie-down or lashing points on the chassis, and those are the only places to attach. Never secure to the boom, the cylinders, the platform or a random bracket, none of which are built to take securement loads and all of which can be damaged. Look for the tie-down symbols, or check the manual to find them.

Four points, rated for the load

Secure the machine at four points, front and rear, with chains or straps rated for the weight, and use binders or ratchets that let you pull the machine down tight against the deck. The hardware's working load limit has to suit the machine, so match rated chains and straps to a heavy load rather than reaching for whatever's already in the truck.

Meet the securement rules

Follow Department of Transportation (DOT) cargo-securement rules: the combined working load limit of your tie-downs needs to be at least half the weight of the machine, with enough tie-downs for the load, and heavy equipment like this is chain-and-binder territory. The stowed boom is secured by stowing and locking it, not by strapping over it. Chock the wheels or tracks if appropriate, confirm nothing can shift, and you're set to roll.

Before You Roll, and After a Few Miles

Confirm the load rides right

Before you pull out, confirm the trailer sits level and the tongue weight looks right, not nose-high from too little tongue weight or squatting from too much, and adjust the machine's position on the deck if it's off. Make sure the boom is fully stowed and locked and every tie-down is tight.

Recheck after a short distance

Stop after the first few miles and recheck the tie-downs, since chains and straps can loosen as the load settles on the deck, then check them again at your normal stops and tighten anything that's worked loose before it becomes a problem.
