How to Read a Telehandler Load Chart

The number on the spec sheet is the number people remember. The machine is "a 10,000 lb telehandler," so a 6,000 lb load should be no problem.

Except that rating describes the machine at its strongest: boom retracted, load tucked in close to the frame, machine level. Push that same load out to the third floor of a building and the machine may not be rated for anywhere near it. The capacity didn't drop because the load got heavier. It dropped because the load moved away from the machine.

That relationship is what a telehandler load chart describes, and reading it correctly is the difference between a routine lift and a tipped machine.

Why a Telehandler Chart Isn't a Forklift Chart

A forklift is mostly a two-variable problem

On a forklift, safe capacity is governed largely by load center and lift height, with the mast staying essentially vertical over the machine. A telehandler adds reach

A telehandler's boom extends outward as well as upward, so the load can end up well in front of the machine. The further out it goes, the longer the lever arm working against the machine's counterweight, and the less it can safely carry.

That's why the chart isn't a single number or a simple table. It's a map of what the machine can lift at every combination of height and forward reach.

  • Forklift: load center and lift height, mast staying over the machine
  • Telehandler: load center, lift height and forward reach, with the load moving away from the frame
  • Consequence: capacity varies continuously through the lift, not just at the top

What You're Looking At

The two axes

A telehandler chart plots lift height on one axis and forward reach, meaning how far the load sits ahead of the machine, on the other. Any lift you're planning is a single point on that grid.

The capacity zones

The chart is divided into zones, each marked with a maximum weight. Find where your height and your reach intersect, and the zone containing that point gives you the maximum load for that position. Capacity is highest close to the machine and drops off toward the outer edge of the chart.

Boom angle and extension

Curved or radial lines running across the chart correspond to boom angle, which the machine reports on an angle indicator in the cab. The boom itself usually carries extension markings, often lettered, that tell you how far it's telescoped out. Between the angle indicator and the extension marks, you can locate exactly where the machine is on the chart at any moment.

The envelope

The outer boundary of the chart is the limit of the machine's rated reach and capacity. A lift that falls outside it isn't a lift this machine can make. There's no interpolating past the edge and no partial credit.

  • Vertical axis: lift height. Horizontal axis: forward reach
  • Zones: maximum load for that height and reach combination
  • Angle lines and boom extension marks: how you locate your position on the chart
  • Chart location: in the cab on the specific machine, and if it's missing or illegible, don't operate until the rental partner replaces it

Reading It for an Actual Lift

Step 1: Know the load's real weight

Actual weight, including the pallet, banding, packaging and anything riding along. Not an estimate and not the container's rated capacity. If you don't know it, find out before the boom moves.

Step 2: Know where it has to go

You need two numbers: the height the load has to reach, and how far forward of the machine that point sits once the machine is parked where it can realistically park.

Reach is the one people underestimate. Scaffolding, spoil piles, ditches, landscaping and soft ground all push the machine further back than planned, and every foot back is a foot of extra reach that costs you capacity.

Step 3: Find the point on the chart

Locate your height and your reach, find where they intersect and read the zone.

Step 4: Compare, then decide

If the zone at that point is rated above your load weight with margin, the lift is inside the envelope. If it isn't, change the geometry rather than attempting it: move the machine closer, lower the placement, split the load, deploy stabilizers if the machine has them and the chart allows, or bring in a larger machine.

"Not rated for it" means don't lift it. It doesn't mean lift it carefully.

Leave a margin

The chart figure is a maximum, not a comfortable working range. As with a forklift, plan for the chart capacity at your required position to exceed the actual load weight by roughly 20 to 25 percent. If the two numbers are within about 10 percent of each other, size up the machine instead of narrowing the margin, because ground conditions, load shift and a slightly optimistic reach estimate all eat into the buffer.

Load Center: The Variable Inside the Load

What it is

Chart capacities assume the load's center of gravity sits a stated distance out from the fork face, commonly 24 in for a standard pallet with evenly distributed weight.

Why it changes your capacity

A long load, a deep load or one packed heavier at the far end pushes the center of gravity further out. That has the same effect as extending the boom: a longer lever arm and less safe capacity. If your load's center sits further out than the chart assumes, the charted number no longer describes your lift.

In practice

Check what load center the chart is based on, estimate your load's actual center of gravity, and when you're unsure, err conservative rather than rounding in your favor. Keep loads centered on the forks and back against the carriage.

The Chart Changes With the Setup

One machine can have several charts, and using the wrong one is a common and serious error.

Every attachment has its own chart

Forks, a carriage, a jib, a bucket, a truss boom or a work platform each change what the machine can safely handle, and each comes with its own chart. Anything that moves the load further from the machine, a jib especially, cuts capacity substantially. Change the attachment and you're on a different chart, so make sure the one you're reading matches what's actually fitted.

Stabilizers change the chart

Machines fitted with stabilizers or outriggers typically have separate charts for stabilizers deployed and stowed. The deployed figures only apply when they're actually deployed as specified. Reading the deployed numbers with the stabilizers up is exactly the kind of mistake that puts a machine on its side.

The chart assumes a level frame

Charts are built on the machine being level. Leveling the frame with the machine's indicator isn't a nicety, it's what makes the chart valid in the first place, and on uneven ground it matters more rather than less.

Configuration matters

Tire type and inflation, counterweight and machine configuration all affect stability. Use the chart for the machine as it's actually configured, not a similar model you've run before. Habits That Keep You Inside the Envelope

  • Plan the lift before you start it, not with the load already in the air
  • Watch the angle indicator and boom extension marks as you go, since your position on the chart changes continuously through the lift
  • Retract before lowering where you can, because extending at low boom angles is where capacity is thinnest
  • Travel with the boom low and retracted and the load close to the machine
  • Never use momentum or a bounce to place a load
  • If the rear of the machine feels light, stop, retract and reassess rather than pushing through
  • Treat a load management or stability indicator as a warning, not a target to operate against
  • Only trained, authorized operators should run the machine, and use a spotter for blind placements
