
How to Avoid Tipping a Mini Skid Steer on Slopes


A mini skid steer is a compact, nimble machine that will happily climb, push and carry more than its size suggests, which is part of why it feels so planted on flat ground. Put one across a slope with a loaded bucket raised up, though, and that same machine will go over faster than you'd believe. Slopes are where these loaders roll, and it almost always traces back to something the operator could have done differently: the line they drove, how high they carried the load or how fast they took the grade. None of that is complicated once you understand what's happening. Here's how to read a slope and handle the machine so it stays on its tracks.
Why a mini skid steer tips on a slope
It comes down to one thing: the center of gravity. A machine stays upright as long as its center of gravity sits inside the footprint of its tracks or wheels. Tilt the ground under it and gravity starts dragging that center of gravity toward the downhill edge of the footprint, and once it crosses that edge, the machine goes over.
Two things speed that along. Raising the loader arms lifts the center of gravity higher, and loading the bucket shifts weight forward and up, so a raised, loaded arm on a slope leaves a much smaller margin than an empty machine sitting flat. Empty, most of a mini skid steer's weight sits low and to the rear. Load the bucket and lift it, and that balance moves forward and up, toward the edge you're trying to stay away from.
These loaders go over two ways: sideways, rolling down a slope they're sitting across, and end over end, pitching forward or back on a grade that's too steep for the load. The good news is that the things that cause both, your travel direction, load height, speed and the ground, are all yours to control.
Keep the bucket low, every time
The simplest habit that keeps a machine upright is carrying the bucket or attachment low to the ground whenever you're moving, and lower still on a grade. A low load keeps the center of gravity down where it belongs, inside the footprint. Just don't carry it so low that it catches on the ground or a curb.
Save the lifting for when you're parked. Don't travel across a slope, or up and down one, with the arms raised and a load up high. Get to the work point on stable, level ground, and only then raise the arms to dump or place the load. Raising a loaded arm while the machine is on a slope is one of the quickest ways to put it over.
And remember that the machine handles differently loaded. A full bucket, a set of forks with a load on them, or a heavy attachment like an auger or breaker all move the balance, so what felt stable empty can feel tippy loaded. Drive straight up and down, never across
If you take away one rule, make it this one: on a slope, travel straight up and down, never across it. Driving across a grade, or side-hilling, throws the center of gravity out over the downhill tracks, and that's the classic way these machines roll. If you absolutely have to cross a slope, pick the gentlest part, keep the load on the ground, go slow, and spend as little time across it as you can.
There's a companion rule that trips people up, so it's worth getting exactly right: keep the heavy end of the machine pointed uphill. When the bucket is loaded, the load is the heavy end, so you drive forward going up the hill and back down it, keeping the load on the uphill side both ways. When the bucket is empty, the machine's own weight sits at the rear, so you do the opposite: back up the hill and drive forward coming down, keeping the rear uphill. Either way the heavy end stays high, which keeps the machine from pitching end over end on the grade. Reversing up a hill with an empty bucket feels backward, but that's the safe way to do it.
Go slow, and save your turns for flat ground
Speed is the other half of most slope rollovers. Take grades slowly, because speed and a slope together leave you no time to react when something shifts. Just as important, keep your inputs smooth. A sharp turn, a quick change of direction, or a jab at the controls on a slope moves the weight suddenly, and sudden weight movement is what tips a machine that was otherwise fine.
Turning is the riskiest thing you can do on a grade, so don't do it on the steep part. If you need to change direction, get to the flattest ground you can find and turn there, slowly and deliberately. And come downhill under control, letting the drive hold the machine back rather than coasting down and having to check it at the bottom.
Read the ground before you drive it
A slope that looks fine can hide the thing that actually tips you, so walk it before you drive it. Look for soft or wet spots, loose fill, holes, ruts and anything buried that can grab a track or drop a wheel and start a roll. One sunk wheel on a grade can turn a manageable slope into a rollover.
Give edges a wide berth. Trench edges, retaining walls, embankments and drop-offs can shear off under the weight of the machine, so stay back from them, at least as far as the drop is deep. Working right up to the lip of a bank is how the ground gives way and takes the machine with it.
Weather matters too. Wet, loose or frozen ground cuts traction and lets a machine slide sideways even on a moderate grade, and a slope that was fine last week can be treacherous after rain. Tracks grip better than wheels, but they don't make anything tip-proof, so don't let them talk you onto a slope you'd otherwise avoid.
Know the machine's limit, and respect it
Every machine has a rated maximum operating grade in its manual, and that number is a limit, not a target. If a slope looks steeper than the machine is rated for, keep the machine off it. Read the operator's manual and the decals before you start, and take the slope rating seriously, along with whatever the manufacturer says to do if the machine starts to go over, since that guidance differs from model to model.
It's worth remembering how you're positioned on a mini skid steer. Unlike a full-size seated machine with a cab, a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and a seatbelt, a mini is run from a stand-on platform or from behind the machine, with nothing strapping you in. Keep your weight centered and your footing solid, and treat that lack of a cage as one more reason to stay well within the machine's limits on a grade rather than testing them.
On a job site, only a trained operator should be running one.
