
How to Chain Down Heavy Equipment: DOT Tie-Down Requirements


Hauling a machine is the part of the job with the least room for error. A loaded excavator that comes off a trailer at highway speed is a catastrophe, and the federal rules for chaining down heavy equipment are written in exactly that reality. The good news is they're clear and specific, not a judgment call. Here's what the Department of Transportation (DOT) actually requires, how to do it right and the corners people cut that they shouldn't.
Start with the right trailer
Before you chain anything, make sure the trailer can carry the machine. The equipment's weight plus the trailer's own weight has to stay within the trailer's rating and your tow rating, and the deck and anchor points have to be rated for the load. A trailer that isn't built for the machine is a problem no amount of chain fixes, so start by picking one rated for the weight from our trailer rentals.
Your chains anchor to the trailer's rated points, the D-rings, stake pockets or rated rub rail, not a random spot on the frame. If a trailer doesn't have proper anchor points for the load, it's the wrong trailer.
The DOT rule for heavy equipment, in plain terms
The federal cargo securement rules set a hard minimum for heavy equipment, and it's stricter than for general cargo. Under the rule that governs it, 49 CFR 393.130, any machine that runs on wheels or tracks and weighs 10,000 pounds or more has to be restrained against movement in every direction, forward, back, side to side and up, with a minimum of four tie-downs, one at each independent corner.
Longer machines need more. The rule adds a tie-down for every 10 feet of length beyond the first 10, so a long excavator often needs five or six, not four. Underneath the count is the rating rule: the combined working load limit (WLL) of all your tie-downs has to be at least half the weight of the machine you're hauling, so a 20,000-pound machine needs at least 10,000 pounds of aggregate working load limit in its chains. Under 10,000 pounds you can follow the general cargo rules, but this four-point method is the safe default for any machine.
Use chains and binders rated for the job
Heavy equipment gets chained, not strapped, and the rating is the whole point. Use transport chain and load binders, commonly grade 70, which is rated for securement. Hardware-store chain isn't rated and has no place here, and straps alone aren't suitable for heavy metal machinery.
Remember the weakest part sets your limit. A high-rated chain on a weaker binder or a weak anchor point is only as strong as that weakest piece, so the whole path, chain, binder and anchor, has to carry the load. Cross the chains at the corners for stability, and anchor them to the machine's designated tie-down points, the lugs or holes the manufacturer marked for it, never the axles, cylinders or anything that moves.
Lower and secure the attachments
The bucket, boom, blade or forks come down and get secured too. The rules specifically require accessory equipment to be completely lowered and secured to the trailer, so drop an excavator's arm and bucket to the deck, put a skid steer's bucket down, lower the blade and rest any boom down. An attachment left up in the air bounces, shifts the load and works chains loose.
If a machine articulates in the middle, like an articulated loader, it has to be restrained so it can't articulate in transit. Set the parking brake, and lock the controls and the hydraulics before you pull out.
Tighten, chock and re-check
Tension every binder down, then chock the tracks or wheels. Chocks aren't a substitute for chains, but the rules call for them on machines whose tracks or wheels can move on the deck, and they add a real layer against roll.
Then re-check the chains after the first few miles. Equipment settles and chains loosen as you drive, so pull over early and re-tension, then check again along the way. A loose chain is barely better than no chain, and ten minutes of re-checking is the cheapest insurance on the road.
Who has to follow this, and why you should anyway
These are federal rules for commercial hauling, but the physics don't care about your license plate. If you're hauling commercially, the Department of Transportation rules apply and you comply, full stop, and most states fold the same securement standard into their own laws.
