
How to Get a Lift Through a Doorway or Into a Building


Renting a lift for indoor work is the simple part,really.
The puzzle starts when the machine shows up and you have to get it through the front door, down a hallway, around a corner and over to where the work actually is, all without jamming it in a doorway or cracking a floor on the way.
It happens more than you'd think; a lift that's perfect for the job turns out to be an inch too wide for the door or an inch or two too tall for the ceiling once it's inside.
Almost all of it comes down to measuring first and walking the route. Getting the machine to the site is a separate job, covered in how to load and transport a scissor lift; this is about the stretch from the truck to the work. Here's how to get a lift into a building without a nasty surprise.
First: Measure the machine and the opening
Before anything else, get the numbers on paper. From the machine, you want its stowed width, the make-or-break number for a doorway, along with its stowed height for the door header and low ceilings, its length and its weight. From the opening, you want the clear width and clear height of the door, meaning the actual gap you can pass through, not the outside of the frame, and whether it's a single door, a double you can open both leaves of, or a roll-up.
The rule is simple. The machine's stowed width has to be less than the door's clear width, ideally with an inch or two to spare, and its stowed height has to clear the header. Pull the machine's exact stowed dimensions from the listing rather than eyeballing them, because with a doorway, an inch is the whole difference between rolling straight through and getting wedged halfway.
Pick a lift that actually fits the door
Lifts come in a range of widths, and some are built deliberately narrow to pass through a standard doorway, so match the machine to the access you have, not only to the work height you need. A machine that can't get in is no use at any height.
For indoor work through a standard door, a narrow electric scissor lift is the usual answer, so check its stowed width against your tightest opening before you book. For really tight interior spaces, where even a scissor lift won't fit or turn, a one-person lift is the compact option, built for exactly that.
And go electric for anything indoors. An engine-powered lift puts out exhaust, and running one inside is a carbon monoxide hazard, so indoor work calls for an electric machine, which also rides on non-marking tires that won't scuff the floor. Plan the whole path, not just the door
Clearing the doorway is only half the problem. Walk the entire route first, from where the machine comes off the truck to where the work happens, and look for everything that could stop it.
Start with the turns. Hallways and corners need room for the machine to pivot, and a lift that slips through the door can still wedge at a tight turn, so make sure it has room to come around. Then the thresholds. A raised door sill or a lip between floors can hang up a low machine, and a simple threshold ramp or plate carries it over cleanly.
Look at how you get up to the floor, too. Steps, a curb or a loading dock between the outside grade and the interior floor call for a ramp that's rated for the machine and set at a safe slope, not a couple of planks. And check the floor itself. A lift is heavier than it looks, often as much as a pickup truck, and not every floor is rated to carry it, especially upper floors, raised access floors or decorative surfaces. Confirm the floor can take the weight with the building before you roll onto it. If the work is upstairs, you also need a freight elevator that's big enough for the machine and rated for its weight.
Ease it through with a spotter
Stow the machine down before you approach. Lower the platform all the way, and if the guardrails fold down or lift out to clear a low header, do that first. The lower the stowed height, the more you'll fit under.
Then use a spotter. One person drives dead slow while the other watches both sides and the header overhead and calls the clearances out loud. A doorway is tight and a lift has no give, so this isn't the moment to eyeball it alone from the platform. Square up and center the machine on the opening, then creep through, watching the frame on both sides and the header just above.
Protect what you're threading between. Corner guards or a moving blanket at the pinch points save the door frame and the machine, and a run of plywood under the tires protects a floor you can't afford to mark or overload. Take your time here, since the whole trip through the door should feel slow and deliberate.
Mind the ceiling once you're inside
Getting in is not the same as being able to work. Indoors, the ceiling and everything hanging from it, the beams, ductwork, sprinkler heads, light fixtures and pipes, caps how high the lift can safely go, and that ceiling is often lower than the wide-open heights these machines are built for.
Keep two heights in mind. There's the stowed height that got the machine through the door, and there's the clearance overhead in the exact spot where you'll raise the platform. They're different questions, and the second one is the one that keeps you safe.
Never let the platform or anything on it touch a sprinkler head, because breaking one floods the building and trips the alarm. Stay clear of electrical runs and ductwork up there too. And if the ceiling in your work area is lower than the height you need to reach, that calls for a different plan, not a platform raised until it's pressed against a pipe.
