The controlling number is your local frost depth and code minimum for a water service, and it varies widely by climate, from fairly shallow in mild regions to several feet down in cold ones. Confirm it with local code and the water utility before you dig. This isn't a number to guess at, and it's the one that decides which machine you can even use.
Match the tie-in depths
The trench has to meet the depth of the main or meter connection at one end and enter the structure at the correct depth at the other, so plan the grade between those two points before you start cutting.
Hold a consistent grade

Ride-on trenchers
A ride-on trencher handles longer runs, greater depth and harder ground, with many models reaching well past a walk-behind's limit, and it keeps a crew productive on a big service or a subdivision. It's more machine to move and maneuver, so match it to a job that actually needs it.
Depth capacity and teeth
The machine's boom and chain set its maximum depth, so confirm it reaches your required service depth with margin, and match the chain and teeth to the soil, with rock teeth for rock. Don't rent to your best-case soil. Rent to the ground you actually have.
When it's an excavator instead
A trencher is the tool for a long, narrow, consistent-depth run, which is what most water services are. Running the Trench Cleanly
Locate and plan the route
Mark the run from the tie-in to the structure, keeping it as straight and direct as the site and the required separations allow. A straight run is faster to cut, easier to hold grade on and simpler to locate later.
Cut to consistent depth
Keep the depth uniform along the run so the whole line stays below frost, and check your grade as you go rather than discovering a problem at the end.
Bed and protect the pipe
Give the pipe proper bedding and keep sharp rock away from it, since a service line has to last decades underground. Backfill and compact per your practice and code so the ground doesn't settle over the line later.
Restore the surface
Plan for restoring the lawn, drive or hardscape you cut through, since a service line usually runs across a finished yard, and the restoration is part of the job the customer sees.
