A solar array is mostly repetition: the same panel, placed again and again, either up on a roof or out across a field. The install itself is straightforward. Getting a few hundred modules to where they need to go, safely and without hand-bombing them up a ladder, is the part that decides how the day runs.
That's a lifting problem, and it comes in two halves. The material has to get to the work, and the crew has to get to the work. A telehandler handles the first, moving bundles of panels up to a roof or down a row of ground mounts. A lift handles the second, putting installers where they can actually work. Most solar jobs of any size need both.

The telehandler places the material
A telehandler lifts and places pallets or bundles of modules at height and reach, getting the panels from the ground or the truck up to the roof or out to the row. Its telescoping boom reaches out as well as up, which is what lets it set a load in the middle of a roof rather than only at the edge.
The lift positions the workers
A scissor or boom lift raises installers and their tools to the work elevation on a stable, railed platform. It's how a crew works a roof edge, an elevated array or a canopy safely, instead of balancing on ladders with an armful of hardware.
Why crews run both
The two machines don't stand in for each other. One moves panels, the other moves people, and on a job of any size the material handling and the crew access are happening at the same time. That's why a well-run solar site usually has both working at once.
Rooftop Installs
Getting panels onto the roof
The telehandler lifts bundles from ground level to the roof, which on a commercial flat roof or a multi-story building is a real reach-and-height problem, not just a straight lift. Reach matters as much as height here: setting a bundle at the roof edge is easy, but placing it toward the center of a large roof takes forward reach, and capacity drops the further out the load goes.
Crew access at the edge

The load still has to move up top
Once bundles are on the roof, plan how they get from the drop point to each array location. The machine placed them, but the crew distributes them, and staging the drops near the work saves a lot of carrying.
Ground-Mount Installs
Moving panels across the site
On a ground array or solar farm, the telehandler carries pallets from the staging area out to each row, across open and often rough ground. Rough-terrain telehandlers are built for exactly this: unimproved, graded or uneven sites where a standard machine would struggle.
Placing along the rows
Fixed-tilt ground mounts sit low, so a lot of the actual install is at or near grade. But the material still has to travel, and a telehandler beats carrying pallets across a field by hand. Its reach lets it set a load down a row without driving over installed racking or trenched wiring.
Elevated arrays, canopies and carports
Solar carports, canopy structures and elevated commercial arrays put the work well off the ground, and that's where lifts come back into the picture for crew access. A boom lift's reach suits variable heights and reaching in over structure, while a scissor lift handles stable, straight-up elevated work.
Matching Reach and Capacity to the Array
This is the part that determines whether the machine you booked can actually do the job. It comes down to three numbers, in order.
Start with the load, not the machine
Get the actual weight of what you're lifting. A single module is manageable, but a pallet or bundle of modules is heavy, and racking, ballast blocks and hardware are heavier still. Don't estimate it. The bundle weight is the number everything else gets checked against.
Then the position: how high and how far
Working height has to reach your placement point, whether that's a roof level or an elevated array. Forward reach is the one people underestimate, because the machine parks where it can park, and obstacles, landscaping, trenches and installed rows all push it back, and every foot back adds reach.
Capacity is not a single number
A telehandler's capacity is highest with the boom tucked in and drops sharply as it extends out and up. So the number that matters isn't the headline maximum, it's the capacity at the exact height and reach your placement requires. Confirm the lift falls inside the machine's rated envelope at that position, with margin to spare. For crew lifts, capacity is people plus tools
A work platform's capacity has to cover the installers plus their tools plus any material riding up with them, and on a solar crew that adds up faster than expected once panels and hardware are on the deck.
Choosing the Lift for the Site
Scissor or boom
A scissor lift gives a big, stable platform straight up and suits flat, firm sites and straightforward elevated work. A boom lift reaches up, out and over obstacles, which fits rooftop access over a parapet, carports and reaching in over structure. An articulating boom adds the ability to get up-and-over and into awkward positions the array geometry creates.
Terrain decides more than you'd expect
Ground-mount sites are frequently rough, graded or soft, so rough-terrain and four-wheel-drive machines matter outdoors, where an electric slab-floor lift simply won't go. Site and Safety Notes
Watch overhead and underground
Solar sites often have overhead power lines, and ground mounts have trenched wiring, so plan machine positioning and travel around both. Once modules are wired, an array can be energized, so treat it as live.
The telehandler is a material handler
Don't lift people on a telehandler unless it's fitted with a manufacturer-approved work platform and rated and permitted for that use. To put workers at height, use a proper aerial lift built for it.
Protect the crew at height
Use fall protection for rooftop and elevated work, and keep only trained, authorized operators on the machines. A spotter helps on blind placements and around installed racking, where the operator can't see the set point.
Set up level
Both machine types need firm, level setup, and the telehandler's frame has to be leveled for its load chart to be valid. On the rough ground common to ground-mount sites, that matters more, not less.
