Renting a Telehandler or Forklift to Place Rooftop HVAC Units

Setting a rooftop unit is the part of an HVAC job that has nothing to do with HVAC. Before anyone connects a duct or a line, a heavy piece of equipment has to get from the back of a truck to a curb on the roof, placed accurately and without incident. How you get it there depends on two things: how high the roof is, and how far in the unit has to land.

That's a lifting problem, and the machine that solves it is usually a telehandler, sometimes a forklift, and occasionally a crane when the numbers get big. Picking the right one comes down to the unit's weight and where it has to go, so it's worth thinking through before the equipment shows up.

Two Machines, Two Roles

The telehandler places the unit

A telehandler's telescoping boom reaches up and out, so it can lift a rooftop unit (RTU) from the ground, extend over the roof edge or parapet, and set it down on the curb. Reach is the whole point: the load travels over the obstacle to its position, instead of the machine having to be directly under the setdown point, which a straight-mast machine can't manage.

The forklift handles the unit on the ground

A standard or rough-terrain forklift is built to lift straight up and carry, so it's the tool for unloading the RTU from the truck, moving it around the site and staging it, and for low or single-story placement. It's limited in height and, especially, in forward reach, so on this kind of job it's a material handler more than a rooftop placement machine.

Bigger jobs use both

Using a Telehandler for Rooftop Placement

Reach over the edge, onto the curb

The telehandler lifts the unit, extends the boom over the parapet, and sets it onto the roof curb, ideally lined up with the duct and electrical openings so it drops into position. Placing a unit toward the center of a roof takes more forward reach than placing it at the edge, and that reach is exactly where capacity gets tight.

Height and reach, together

The machine has to reach the roof height and the forward distance to the curb from wherever it can park, and the two together decide whether the lift is inside the machine's envelope. A taller building, or a curb set well back from the edge, pushes both numbers up at once.

Precise, controlled placement

Where a Forklift Fits

Ground handling and staging

A forklift unloads the RTU from the delivery truck, moves it across the site to the lift point and stages it, which keeps the placement machine free to do nothing but lift. For a shop moving units around a yard or a dock, this is where a forklift earns its keep.

Low and single-story placement

On a low, single-story building where the height and reach are modest, a rough-terrain forklift with enough lift may set a unit directly, though its limited forward reach is the constraint. Matching the Machine to the Unit and the Roof

This is the part that decides whether the machine you booked can actually make the lift. It comes down to three numbers, in order.

Start with the unit's real weight

Get the actual weight of the RTU, including any curb adapter, accessories and the rigging or forks carrying it, not the bare cataloged weight. Rooftop units vary a lot by tonnage, so this is a get-the-number step, not an estimate you round in your favor.

Then the position: how high and how far

The roof height sets the lift height, and the distance from where the machine can safely park to the curb sets the forward reach. Reach is the number people underestimate, since the machine parks back from the building and obstacles, landscaping and the parapet all add distance.

Capacity is not a single number

A telehandler's capacity is highest with the boom tucked in and drops sharply as it extends out and up, so the figure that matters is the capacity at the exact height and reach the placement requires, with margin, not the headline maximum. When it's a crane instead

If the unit is too heavy, the roof too high, or the reach too far for the machine's rated envelope, it's a crane job. Forcing a telehandler past its chart is how equipment and machines get wrecked, and it's not a place to push your luck to save a rental.

Rigging and Setting the Unit

Forks or a lifting attachment

An RTU can be carried on forks under the unit, or rigged from a boom-mounted lifting hook or jib with slings, depending on the unit, the access and the setdown. A suspended, rigged load is qualified rigging work, so rated slings, proper hardware and a competent rigger belong on that part of the job.

Mind the center of gravity

Rooftop units are often unevenly weighted, with the heavy compressor end off-center, so know where the balance point is and rig or fork accordingly to keep the load level. An off-center load that tips on the forks is a bad surprise to have at height.

Spotters and communication

A spotter positioned on the roof guides the final placement onto the curb, since the operator can't see the setdown point from the ground, and clear hand signals or radios keep the two in sync. Keep everyone clear of the load and out from under it.

Land it on the curb

Set the unit square on the curb, aligned with the duct and electrical openings, and confirm it's seated before the machine releases the load.

Site and Safety

Set up on firm, level ground

Both machines need firm, level footing, and the telehandler's frame has to be leveled for its load chart to be valid, which matters more on a tight or sloped site than on an open one.

The machine stays on the ground

The lift machine works from the ground and doesn't drive onto or load the roof structure, so plan its position for reach rather than trying to get closer by climbing the building.

Watch overhead and around

Overhead power lines are a serious hazard on a lift this size, so plan the machine position and boom path around them, and keep the swing area and the area under the load clear while the unit is up.

People and access

Don't lift crew on a telehandler or forklift without a manufacturer-approved platform. The roof crew gets up by proper access, and only trained, authorized operators run the machines.
